Abstract

The article introduces the special issue on the right to the city and climate change. This issue comprises 20 articles based on research into the challenges that climate change poses to urban law. The selection reflects the thematic and regional diversity required to address the complexity and scope of climate challenges in urban law. The special issue is structured into three interconnected sections: (I) Climate Justice and Dispossession Logics: texts criticising climate approaches that ignore pre-existing
urban inequalities and reproduce exclusionary logics. (II) Climate Crisis and Urban Planning Policies: analyses of the adaptation and mitigation strategies adopted by Brazilian municipalities. (III) Brazilian Legislative Architecture and the Climate Crisis: an examination of how legislation has coped with the effects of the climate emergency. The contributions aim to encourage critical discussion about responses to the climate crisis in a diverse and unequal country like Brazil, questioning market-driven solutions and the appropriation of environmental discourse by the green economy and its speculative logics.

Doutora em Arquitetura e Urbanismo pela Universidade Federal da Bahia. Coordenadora do Grupo de Pesquisa Direito, Territorialidade e Insurgência – UEFS.

Luana Xavier Pinto Coelho, Universidade de Coimbra

Pesquisadora em Pós-Doutorado no Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra e Doutora em Direitos Humanos em Sociedades Contemporâneas pela mesma Universidade. Mestre em Cooperação Internacional e Desenvolvimento Urbano (IUGUPMF, Grenoble/França e TUD, Darmstadt/Alemanha).
